I’m a fan of Olay’s skincare lines so when they asked me to review their newest gel moisturizer, I was excited to see what they had come out with next.
Glowing, healthy skin was a major trend on the Spring/Summer 2014 runways. DKNY, Peter Som, Dolce and Gabbana all had their models looking radiant and fresh even though we all know how tired those girls actually are with their hectic fashion week schedules. Olay’s Fresh Effects Dew Over is a great product to help you mimic that coveted glow, it’s like beauty sleep in an instant, designed to give your skin an instant refresh and 24 hour hydration- no sleep required. Olay’s Fresh Effects Dew Over is also said to be formulated with powder to absorb quickly and make skin look less oily. It’s oil-free, cooling and is infused with the essence of honeysuckle and white tea.
Upon first inspection, the first thing I noticed was how good it smells! It’s light and fresh, reminds me of summer time. I usually apply the moisturizer in the morning after washing my face and as advertised, it actually does have a cooling sensation which felt great and and woke me up. It’s great for tired eyes and groggy mornings. This would also be the product to reach for on hot days to refresh your skin and give yourself a quick pick-me-up. Olay’s Fresh Effects Dew Over is a lightweight gel (as opposed to a cream) and it absorbs extremely quickly. In just a few seconds, I am able to put makeup right on top of it without it interfering with the application.
I have combination skin with several dry patches on my chin and cheeks, and unfortunately the gel was not hydrating enough on these areas. It made my skin very soft but I found myself needing to add a second, slightly heavier cream to the drier areas of my face in order to get the hydration I needed. It did curb the oil on my t-zone pretty well and I found myself not having to blot with my oil absorbing sheets as much throughout the day.
Fantastic for Oily Skin
While it may not be the ideal moisturizer for dry skin, Olay’s Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel is perfect for oily skin. The product is said to be formulated with powder (looking at the ingredient list, I’m thinking it’s silica) so it aids in the absorption of oil. When I noticed Olay using the word “dew” in title of their product, I was wondering how they would achieve a dewy finish to the skin, while targeting a more oily skin demographic. The two don’t usually go hand in hand and I know a lot of my oily skinned clients shy away from anything “dewey”, as they think it will make them look more shiny. I’m not sure how, but Olay’s Fresh Effects Dew Over does a really great job at keeping the skin oil-free and matte, while also giving it a nice glow.
Will it be Going in my Kit?
I am content with the moisturizer I already have in my kit for oily skin so I will not be switching it out.
No. Olay is owned by Proctor and Gamble and they do test on animals.
Natural and/or Environmentally Friendly?
The ingredients are not natural and if you are concerned about parabens, this does contain them.
In 2010, The Procter & Gamble Company unveiled a long-term environmental sustainability vision which they hope to fully complete by 2020. They have also partnered with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to focus on sustainable sourcing of materials for P&G products and packaging, including renewable forest products and palm oil. Their goal is to ensure traceability of palm oil and palm kernel oil to their supplier mills by the end of 2015, ensuring that there is no deforestation taking place because of their palm oil supply chain.
