Rhinoplasty is one of the top five most common plastic surgery procedures performed each year, but the good news is you don’t always have to go under the knife in order reshape your features. When you contour your nose, it’s possible to effectively create the illusion of a completely different shape. Discover what products to use, understand why it works and learn how to contour your nose below.
What is Contouring?
Contouring is the art of subtlety defining your features using makeup. By using light and dark shades, you can enhance, define and even re-shape your features.
Using Makeup to Create the Illusion of a New Nose
What You’ll Need:
Contour
Within the past few years, contouring has taken the makeup community by storm, and there is no shortage of products designed to help you reach your goals.
Color is Important
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make when contouring is using too warm of a shade for their skintone. If your skintone is pale to medium, you’ll want to reach for a matte, cool toned contour. Look for beige, taupe and greyish tones. If you have tan to deep skin, cool tones also work for you, but warmer shades can look great as well.
Cream vs. Powder
If you’re just learning how to contour, I recommend starting out with a contour powder instead of cream because it’s more forgiving. If you make a mistake, you can blend it away. In my kit, I find myself reaching for powder more often than cream because I find it gives more subtle results.
If you want the heavily contoured Instagram look, or if you are more advanced at makeup, try a cream. I use creams when I need to really sculpt out features.
Products I Recommend
My holy grail contour product is Kevyn Aucoin’s Sculpting Powder. I have used this in my kit for years and I reach for it in 85% of situations. The colors are perfect for contouring and they carry three shades for all skintones: light, medium and dark. [review HERE].
I also have recently started using Kat Von D’s Shade and Light  kit for powder highlighting and I’m loving it.
When I need a cream contour, I usually reach for Tom Ford’s Shade and Illuminate , especially on tan, deeper skin tones. He carries two shades, Intensity One and Intensity Two and they apply and blend beautifully.
I also love Senna Cosmetics Face Sculpting Kit. Makeup Artist Eugenia Weston created this product for the makeup department on Desperate Housewives. The colors are fantastic and super pigmented. I also like this product because the cream is not too emollient and it’s easy to control.
You Don’t Need Expensive Contour Kits
You do not need a specific contour kit in order to get the results you want. 5 years ago there were hardly any contouring products on the market but makeup artists have been utilizing this trick for decades. Grab a shade of foundation 2-3 shades darker than your skin tone, or use a taupe eyeshadow. NYX’s Over the Taupe or S.O.S eyeshadows are good colors. Just please, for the love of God.. skip the bronzer if you are any shade lighter than tan. Orange contour is unnatural and looks ridiculous.
.
Highlight
Highlighter attracts and mimics light by giving the illusion of higher, brighter features.. and it can enhance your contouring results ten fold. Just like with contouring products, you have a endless options when it comes to highlighters.
 Liquid vs Powder
Liquid highlighters are going to give your skin a dewey, more natural looking finish. I prefer using them much more than powder because it makes the skin look like it’s glowing from within. Liquid highlighter on dry skin gives amazing results and will give life to your skin. If you’re more on the oily side, you might find that liquid highlighter to slips around too much.
Powder highlighter is arguably the most popular formula in consumer makeup, especially when it comes to contouring your nose. Powder will give you a much stronger and dramatic highlight, especially when layered. This formula is better for those with oily skin.
I tend to associate powder highlighter more with Instagram looks, and liquid highlighter with red carpet. Both formulas can yield beautiful results when applied correctly and it just depends on the look you’re going for.
Products IÂ Recommend
My go-to liquid highlighter is Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheers. They make your skin look so glowy and fresh. You can also mix them with foundation for an even more natural highlight. For a less expensive option, try NYX Liquid Illumination.
For powder highlight, I like NARS Albatross [review HERE] and Kevyn Aucoin’s Celestial Powder for a natural look. If you want serious glare, check out Anastasia Beverly Hills’ highlighters for more of a dramatic glow.
Tools
When learning how to contour your nose, the brushes you use will have a significant impact on your results. AÂ small blending brush such as the MAC 217 will give you precision when contouring and highlighting. Angled brushes and small oval brushes, like Artis, also work well. For applying both powder and liquid highlighter, I love Cozzette’s Mini Eye Blender brush. Cozzette brushes are synthetic so they can be used for liquid or powder products [review HERE].
I always use a damp Beauty Blender to blend out harsh lines. I also like to tap liquid highlight onto the nose with it for a really natural looking highlight.

How To Contour Your Nose
Step 1
Apply your foundation before any contouring
Step 2
Using your contour product, draw a thin line down each side of your nose. Start with a light hand, it’s easier to build product than to take it away. Check out the diagram below to get an idea about where to place your lines. Again, every nose is different and contour placement will always depend on the shape of your nose, as well as the shape you’re looking to create.. The closer together you place your contour lines, the slimmer your nose will appear.
Use these guides to understand how to contour for different nose types:
How to Contour a Wide Nose
If your nose is consistently wide from the bottom to the top, you will carry your contour lines to the bridge of the nose. Blend them up into the outer ridge of your eye socket for a seamless transition.
How to Contour Wide Nostrils
If you have wide nostrils, bring your contour lines down and onto the front of your nostrils.Â
How to Contour a Bulbous Nose Tip
If the bottom of your nose is wide or bulbous, draw a “down-facing arrow” once you begin to reach the tip. This will create the illusion of a more narrow tip.
Step 3
Clean off your brush, or grab a new one. It’s time to highlight.
Contouring is the most important step to reshaping your nose and highlighting enhances the results. These next steps are optional, but you will see more dramatic results if you use them.
Step 4
With your highlighter, apply a narrow line down the very center of your nose.
For those with bulbous or wide nose tips: Only take your highlight half-way down and stop before the tip of your nose starts. If you highlight the the tip of your nose, you will only make it look wider and more bulbous as you are bringing light to that area.
Step 5
Take a clean, fluffy brush or a Beauty Blender and buff out your lines. Do not blend the contour lines into the highlight or it will look muddy. Blend, blend, blend, you want it to appear natural.

Thank you for this! My nose is really wide and I’ve always heard about this technique but never understood how to actually do it. The diagrams helped a lot. I hope it works on my nose!
I’m glad I could help! Actually seeing how its done always helps me better than reading the steps as well. Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.
Great stuff as usual…
Your site is like a blonde with a brain. I like it. All jokes aside, very informative aricle and equally impressive design.
I have used the NoseSecret nose corrector for years and I find them very helpful when it comes to slim the nose without surgery or make up.
It is worth to try.

Hi Sahiba,
Outside of the tricks I listed in the post above, there is not much you can really do to reduce the width of your nose without surgery. Practice with makeup and you’ll see a difference. Good luck!

really great post ! i just have a question about contouring the nose tip specifically …i tried the upside down arrow but it does not help my nose tip somebody else recommended that i try the upside down “v”. I was wondering whether you could explain this alternate method further please ! 🙂
Hi Lola!
The V is pretty much the same as the arrow. The only thing that makes it different is the shading down the sides of the nose. If you don’t want to alter the width of the bridge of your nose, don’t shade down the sides; only shade the tip in the “v” shape. Basically you will be using your contour powder or cream to shade the sides of the tip of your nose, joining them in the middle at the very center of your nose tip, making it look slimmer.
Hope this makes sense! It’s hard to explain without photos so If you have any other questions feel free to ask 🙂
thank you so much for the reply this is honestly the best nose contouring post on the internet by far! your are really great thank you soooo soo much. This post actually saved me from seriously considering rhinoplasty 🙂
your explanation was helpful but i was wondering if you could please suffice a quick diagram like the ones shown above to illustrate it. I think i get what you are saying but it would be really beneficial to get your exact methodology behind the alternate method 🙂
i ddnt had any confedence in public bcoz of my wide nose my colleages always used to tease me for the same now iam happy i hope this will work
i m very happy n i like it.
i like it.
cool-hope it works for mine too-my nose is normal but i still want to make it smaller
hello, i hope u relpy, but my nose goes staight down starting from my eyebrows then at the tip its a bump how can i concour that large bump and there is lots of sken from my nostils to the tip
Hi Sara,
Without seeing your nose it’s hard to know exactly where you should contour. Based on the description you gave, I’d follow the directions within the post in regards to the “bulbous” tip. Shading the the sides of the tip might work as well.
Hi! This post is absolutely great! I’ve been considering rhino lately but I think I’ll give it one more try! My problem is that my nose is long and the tip goes down whenever I laugh. i hate my photos! And the bridge gets wider just above my nostrils and then slims down. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!!
Hi Lola. Darkness recedes and lightness highlights so in order to give the illusion of a shorter tip, I’d (carefully!) contour it. Focus on the underside and curve of the tip of your nose . It will make it look a little shorter and a little more turned up. Hope this helps!
hey…This post is absolutely fantastic… it really worked for me.. thank you soo much for this awesome post.. i have been looking all over the internet for a very long time but nothing found as effective as this post is..thank you again.. and you very very pretty 🙂
can you please tell me how do i cover my dark circles?
wish you all the very best for your future.. good job.. keep it up!!!
Hi Nimra,
Thanks so much! Im glad that it worked for you. To cover dark circles I like to use a peach based concealer. Basic color theory says that orange (peach) is the opposite of blue (blueish tint of dark circles) so it cancels out the color perfectly. Eve Pearl is infamous for her peach concealer and she has shades for all skin tones. I highly recommend it!! Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂
Thank you so much for this! Just about to try it out for myself. I’ve been researching rhinoplastry all day and even considered applying for a finance loan to cover the costs. Seeing this has made me stall that option 🙂
Thank you!!!
Have you tried having nose right tool. it really make your nose smaller. i also used it from 2month now my nose really smaller and sharp.
Hi Vicki,
I’ve never heard of Nose Right but I just googled it and it looks interesting. Glad you’ve seen improvement!
I love your site! I’ve been looking and looking for someone to address the contouring issue of a nose with a skinny bridge and a rounded/bulbous tip. All I can find out there is stuff to contour a wide nose all the way down. The bridge of my nose doesn’t need to be any skinnier, but the ball on the end does! What do you do with that! Thanks a million! : )
Hi Nicole!
I have a similar nose as you, and you would follow a similar pattern as Option #3 on Step #1 but don’t contour the bridge, just focus on the tip. I usually tell people to draw a down facing arrow from the top of one nostril, pointing in the center of the tip of your nose, and back up to the other nostril. Blend well. Hope this makes sense.
Hi! Loved your advice. How does this work for women of color? I have sienna colored skin with lots of gold undertones. Can I use the same technique. What about my friends with really dark skin. Can they do it too?
Hi Ty! Yes, this technique works for any and every skin tone. For you, I’d contour with a cream foundation shade 2-3 shades darker than the shade you normally wear. Or, I also like makeup forever’s sculpting kit. Without seeing you, it’s hard to recommend the shade but they have 4 different ones that fit most skin tones. For girls that have really dark skin (think Alec Wek or Lupita Nyong’o), I actually use a black cream based product. It can seem scary at first but with proper blending it can turn out beautifully. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for the best nose slimming instructions ever. My nose is still an issue even after surgery years ago. I know where contour needs to be applied, but my problem is which drugstore product to use. I have a limited budget. I also would like to tone down my aging lower face. However I have very fair skin and it becomes a problem to contour. Thanks so much
hii….i m also wanted to try dis technique for thinining of nose….i hav wider and bulbous nose…i want to look gorgeous on my marriage …..plzz tell me any more products or technique ….
Am a make up artist but I know I need to learn more, and my jobs are not really good at all, please give me some tips on how to improve myself. thanks
According to my doctor there is one way try nose right tool for make your nose smaller permanent without makeup .
without makeup make nose smaller just try to use noseright tool which is totally work natural i am also using that same tool and trust me i got amazing result
I’ve always used dream matte mouse in light porcelain and put shed loads of stay matte powder by rimmel for a full face coverage with bronzer on my cheeks for colour. I want to know what I can do to get a very nice coverage without all of this foundation/powder as I’m freckly but my whole face becomes white as hell and I’m stuck in a make up rut
Hi Emily, are you using full coverage foundation in order to hide your freckles?
If you don’t want to completely cover your freckles, are you sure you need full coverage? What is your skin like? Honestly, I rarely use only full coverage on anyone because it ends up looking pretty mask-like (like you mentioned). I like to use a light/medium coverage foundation on the whole face, and then a heavier cream foundation or concealer to go-over areas that need more coverage. I’m also not a big fan of powder. I think with the right products, you can get the coverage you desire with just a light dusting of powder to set the foundation (if you’re oily, or really need it).
If you want to totally cover your freckles, look into a fuller coverage foundation. Creams work best. Unfortunately, when it comes to foundation, I haven’t tried a drugstore version that I like that has both full coverage and a natural look. I’ve never used Dream Matte Mousse.
I swear by Kevyn Aucoin SSE for heavy coverage, but a natural looking finish. He has a pale shades that would suit you. It’s expensive but you only need a tiny bit so one pot will last a quite while. Also look into Cover FX and RCMA. RCMA is a professional foundation but it’s great and has amazing coverage while still looking like skin.
I hope this helps, feel free to email me if you have any other questions or need clarification!
I have a hump nose do suggest me any idea
Other Dan surgery
I am a Nigerian a male I have a bigger noise which makes me ashamed but seen ur steps I be gald if it works on my noise I pray so
The tip was great.
All tips are awesummmm
nose right great tool for make nose smaller without any surgery and make just only try to wear nose right tool.
Great and complete guide….thanks. I’ve had surgery, however my nose was left too wide above the nostrils, center nose. I’m aware of what has to be slimmed, but part has to be blended on sides working into part of face closest nose. I have fair skin, so I bought a darker foundation, Cover Girl, Tawny Fauve, kind of bronzy which I don’t like blending on side of nose for fear of contrast with my fair skin. Is there a drugstore product that you can suggest that has stay on power? Needless to say that after the expense and pain of the surgery that I have to resort to this, so any help will be appreciated. Thanks again, Barbara Please do not post my email
Hi Barbara, For contouring I prefer to use shades that are a little more grey than bronze, especially if you’re fair. Like I said in the article, the most natural contour looks like a shadow, not a bronze stripe. Is the CoverGirl foundation you bought a cream, liquid or powder? Try checking out NYX’s taupe blush.L’Oreal also has a pretty good contour color in their infallible pro contour kit. Hope this helps! Keep me posted on how this works for you.
I’ve tried the v-shape for bulbous + pointed tip but nothing works. Always looks worse after shadowing in any way. Tip looks too pointed and large no matter what.
I agree my nose looks terrible after few hours when make up start wearing out. For a while I used the Nosesecret nose enhancer, I saw it forthe first time on Michele Phan blog. I use them consistenly for around 3 years and notice that my nose had imporved now I use it on and off but I still think it is a great alternative. The only downside is that I was always affraid of breathing in plastic but the NoseSecret seems to be a legit company from the US so they are the only brand I trust.
Wow! such an amazing tips for girls. My wife will definitely going to love this post. She only knows the v shape contouring but here are some more ideas and shapes given. I like your post quite much. Thanks for your guidance.
